WARNING!!! I'M DRUNK!!!! (Again)
Oct. 19th, 2004 09:29 pmSo, someone suggested I should make more entries when I'm drunk, and who am I to turn down a suggestion like that? So for your benefit, I got drunk at dinner tonight (on the rent's tab), and now, I'm watching the Sox and telling y'all what's going on.
Well, since I haven't really made a substantive entry in a while, I thought I'd summarize briefly a few things that have happened in the past few weeks.
Anyway, three weeks ago Saturday night, I went downtown and hung out with Eli and some of his med school friends. Including one named Artemis. I think that's an awesome name. More people should be named after Greek gods. They have such awesome names. I think I'll name my first born Bacchus. Or maybe Hephaestus. Or Bob. Anyway, Eli and I went to best buy earlier in the day and he bought a new TV. That was fun. I like TV's. Not so much the stuff that is usually on them, but the TV's themselves are cool. Then we set up the TV and drank, then Artemis and Brian came over and we drank some more, then we went out to a bar and drank some more. There were more people there. I don't remember them. Not so much because of drinks as because I couldn't hear a damn thing that they were saying. I really hate noisy bars. I have a hard time picking out voices over the din of a crowd, let alone when there is music playing. I think they were cool people, but as I said, it's hard to judge. I ended up sleeping on Eli's couch that night because A) I was too drunk to drive, and B) I had to go to work the next day (Sunday) to do server upgrades.
I woke up the next morning half hung over and half drunk, and entirely not wanting to be in the office. Nonetheless, the server upgrades were more or less painless, and done in time to listen to the eagles game on the radio while I drove back home to watch the rest of the game. I only missed the first 10 minutes or so of the first quarter.
If I remember right, two weeks ago tomorrow I went out drinking with Brett and Dov, and a couple of their friends, Ed and Brian. It was fun, we went to the nodding head and drank three pitchers of beer and ate tasty foods. Their malt liquor is especially good. Sooooo tasty. we sat around and talked about stuff, and drank and ate until we could do no more. Then, at eight or so we left to go to a bar where Knob Creek, which is (previously unbeknownst to me) owned and distributed by Jim Beam, was hosting an all you can drink moneyless poker game. This, is a great thing. Essentially, we sat at a table with a few other people and played Texas hold 'em, without betting any real money. The dealer didn't really know the rules that well, but the chips were good clay ones, and they gave us knob creek branded cards. Also, they gave us all the knob creek we could drink. That I was the really good part I guess. I wasn't sure if they would keep bringing it once we weren't in the game, so I tried not to win too much so I could stay at the table. yeah.... that's why I didn't win. Ok, so I didn't win a hand until an hour into the game. So what. I didn't lose any big hands either. I played ultra conservative. Which is odd, because I wasn't playing for any money. Anyway, needless to say, free booze made me extremely drunk. Dov and I walked back towards the train station, and went our separate ways. On the train, I saw my elementary school music teachers husband, and we chatted a bit. Her name is Bobbi Leiter. His name is Bob Leiter. That's gotta be weird in the bedroom. Also, this girl was sitting in front of me was a telemarketer getting off of her dinner shift. I eavesdropped a little on her conversation with another passenger. No real reason other than boredom. I would have piped in at a few points, but I was feeling extremely tired, and it didn't seem worth the effort. I only mention it because, oddly enough, the same girl was sitting next to Brett and I at a deli where we had lunch the next day.
This brings me to a random aside.... what is the etiquette for seeing people you don't know, except that you see them on the train or at the train station almost daily. It's happened a few times now that I've seen people that I "know" from the train, and I have no idea whether I should wave, or nod, or say hello, or what? Is there a standard for this? It's not like I have ever spoken to these people, or have anything but a tangential relationship with them, yet I feel conflicted as to how to acknowledge them. Several times, I have looked at these people outside of the normal locations, and have had a palpable sense that they were contemplating the same dilemma as I. Suggestions?
Something probably happened in the interim between two weeks ago and one week ago, but damned if I remember. I was supposed to go to Boston, but didn't. I think I more or less did nothing with my weekend except sleep.
Last Wednesday, I made my first real mistake at work, and it was pretty serious. We were getting ready to move stuff from an older server to a newer one. I was trying to delete the test copy I had made at 10 that morning so I could move the current version, and didn't realize that I was on the wrong machine. Bam! There goes everything the developers had done that day. I was pretty panicked. It sucked. Thankfully, the originals of the data were still available on other people's computers, so the next morning we had a meeting and discussed how to fix it. Everything was back to normal by 10:30 or 11:00. Still, it was a mistake I won't likely make again.
Last weekend, I went downtown to Eli's again, this time with Seth. We met Eli and Dave there, and drank and listened to music and talked politics. Then we went down to Moriarty's for food, and out to Penn to see Team America: World Police. Go see it. It was hilarious. Not as brilliant or substantive as the South Park movie (yes, I think the south park movie was substantive), but a complete laugh riot. Sunday I spent watching the eagles.
I guess that's all I have for now. I originally wanted to do some more rambling about how I think the country is ripe for a third political party, and how Nader and Badnarik are going about it all wrong, but I'm not awake enough or drunk enough to bother anymore. This entry took too long. If you read all of this, congrats.

Date: 2004-10-20 03:15 am (UTC)I am so glad to see that all my groups of friends (err...2 groups? Oh yeah, I have a lot of friends. NOT!) are coming together so nicely. Eexcellent.
Anyway, if the girl was cute you should have walked over to her, said "hey you dont know me but you and I were on the same train home last night. You wanna have some lunch with me and my friend?" or something like that. If she is a hosebeast from the planet butterface, leave it alone. Just kidding. Ugly people are ugly too. I mean people! They are people too!
I like that the way you mention your fuckup at work made it out as though it was inevitable. Which it of course was. Don't be so hard on yourself. Everyone makes mistakes at work, many more--I've noticed--when you a)don't give a shit about the job and b)actively dislike the boss (as was the case in my illegal job of yore)
Man, I cant fucking wait until new years and stuff. There will be good times aplenty! Hiyaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
